Your Responsibilities

Whether you are running a collection of holiday cottages or a busy student accommodation site, there are a few considerations to make before you allow the public access to your internet connection You’ll need:

A reliable broadband connection with sufficient bandwidth for all your guests

Suitable equipment and software to discourage illegal activity and ensure fair usage for all

Ongoing maintenance and support for your Wi-Fi deployment

A poor Wi-Fi deployment is often the cause of many customer complaints. In addition to this, there are also many laws and regulations that apply to the operation of public Wi-Fi.

Don’t encourage illegal downloads

The Digital Economy Act 2010 is designed to implement steps to reduce online copyright infringement by end users such as illegal downloading of copyrighted material and illegal file sharing through the use of torrent sites and the like.

A case was reported recently where a business owner allegedly received a fine because a user had downloaded copyrighted material over their open Wi-Fi network. This is a very good reason why networks need to be secure, with user activity monitored and illegal downloads blocked.

We speak to people every day who have received copyright infringement notices from their ISP. They have been able to tell them the IP address, the file they downloaded and when. We also speak to people who think this will never happen to them. Don’t be one of those people who gets caught out. Contact us today for more information on how we can secure your network and ensure you’re legally compliant.

Don’t encourage criminal activity

Under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 you need to be able to identify who is using your network at all times. Authorities worldwide can see illegal activities by tracing any suspicious internet traffic back through the ISP. However, this is very difficult to do without the proper infrastructure in place – anyone can install a wireless access point on their network and say they provide Wi-Fi but this is not sufficient and could potentially allow users access to your own confidential data or worse, use your network to commit a crime.

Data protection

Under the Data Protection Act 1998, private information must not be systematically and unnecessarily recorded, and any user of internet access services in a public place is entitled to request, at any time, details of his/her personal information. Failure to securely maintain and make available data is an offence which may lead to large fines. We can design a system that meets all of these requirements and more.
